From 9 February: Almost 100 Participants and Just as Many Ideas Came Together in Lithuania

Our collaboration project 'Closing Gaps: Techniques and solutions for reducing pharmaceutical residuals in the Baltic Sea region' presented its third workshop on February 9th in Vilnius (Lithuania), part of the first stepping stones towards preventative measures.

Representation came from all over the relevant sectors: pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, water management companies, NGOs, environmental protection agencies, technology developers, researchers, policy-making institutions and more.

Key messages included:

  • The urgency of the topic for both health and the environment, and of dealing with the bottlenecks and gaps – there are effective techniques that are available as well as tested, and economic incentives that go along with them.
  • The need to work in the interplay between environment-health-economy and to involve healthcare workers when attending to the issue(s).
  • The importance of environmental risk assessments in the production of pharmaceuticals.
  • And the equal importance of considering solutions' environmental impact, to avoid a technique solving the original problem yet causing harm elsewhere – like intensive energy use for ozonation.

We look forward to taking the next steps together. A special thank you to the host of the workshop LBTA (Lithuanian Biotechnology Association).

Partners in this project are us at NCSH, ScanBalt BioRegion and LBTA, in collaboration with Business Region Göteborg.

Grønnköpingkið Monday: Solution by FLOOW2

Sharing is caring!

This recipe has been mastered by FLOOW2's Sharing Marketplaces, a technology housed in the world’s greenest hospital.

To share already available resources not only reduces wastage and costs, but also helps you in optimising your hospital’s efficiency and resilience. It is a promotion of circularity and reuse:

"If anything, the COVID-19 pandemic has made the importance of collaborating and sharing assets clearer than ever. One central digital platform can help efficiently match demand and supply, paramount for flexibility and resilience. A sharing platform helps to optimise the use of existing assets of equipment, supplies, space, facilities, services and even staff – leading to more circular practices while simultaneously contributing to cost savings.

The Intrakoop sharing platform in the Netherlands connects more than 550 hospitals and long-term care organisations, having listed 200 plus items since its launch. These item range from PPE’s to furniture, ultrasound machines and meal wagons.

'Genbrug of Donation', the Danish sharing platform for Capital Region, was launched at the end of April 2022. Already within its first month, 650 items were exchanged to save more than €130.000 and 39,000 kg of CO2."

Grønnköpingkið Monday: New Solution From E.ON ectogrid™

A smart decentralized energy system for heating and cooling has moved into the digital hospital

Enabling the sharing and reusing of energy, E.ON ectogrid™’s solution constitutes a more sustainable energy system, adding to a green transition of energy supply in city quarters and dense communities (like hospitals).

"The system can share and reuse heating and cooling between buildings in a hospital area. It recycles energy for as long as possible and only adds new external energy after all existing internal energy streams have been exhausted. By doing so, it decreases the hospital’s energy cost and lowers the environmental footprint.

In some cases, the need for external energy has been reduced by 60% using E.ON ectogrid™. The temperatures in the system are lowered to the range of the earth’s temperatures, thus increasing safety in hospital areas and – since the system is bi-directional – there is only need for two pipes in the ground, taking up less space in densely built hospital areas."

You find E.ON ectogrid™’s solution in the category Energy Solutions by visiting the world’s greenest hospital:

New Member: FrostPharma

The visionary Swedish pharma company FrostPharma is now a part of NCSH!

We are happy to announce the entry of FrostPharma to our collaborative journey towards more sustainable healthcare systems worldwide. The company delivers several innovative products, and you can read about one of these (WoodSafe®) below:

"FrostPharma AB is a Sweden-based specialty pharma company founded in 2016. The Company focuses on commercializing niche pharmaceuticals and healthcare consumables throughout the Nordics and Baltics. Sustainability is a major part of our business. We carry a portfolio of 8 bioplastic disposable items and unique risk waste containers in 100% biocomposite - WoodSafe®.

About WoodSafe®

woodsafe
WoodSafe® is a new innovative series of hazardous waste containers made of residuals (sawdust) from Swedish forests and recycled plastics that halve the C02 emissions.

Today, hazardous waste containers in different sizes are a big part of the plastic consumption within healthcare. Aside from examination gloves and disposable aprons, hazardous waste containers are the biggest product in number of tons per year that go to incineration. According to LCA analyses, we could more than halve the climate footprint by just replacing today’s fossil-based plastic containers to containers made in biocomposite.

WoodSafe® is based on biocomposite produced by Stora Enso. The material is optimized to replace a wide range of polymers and it can also achieve a very high tensile strength. The benefits of wood fiber are its strength, natural look, its renewable raw material, and the low CO2 footprint. Stora Enso’s biocomposite is uniquely made to combine these advantages. WoodSafe® hazardous waste containers have optimized the mix of wood fibers and polymers with the purpose to meet the requirements of waste containers, according to UN tests, and at the same time minimize the climate impact. Woodsafe® is a part of the pharmaceutical company FrostPharma holds the patent portfolio regarding these hazardous waste containers."

New Member: Silentia

It is our pleasure to introduce Silentia and their privacy screens to the network!

Functionality, flexibility and sustainability – these three words and more can be used to describe our new member Silentia. In their own phrases, the company is explained in more detail like this:

"For more than 30 years, Silentia has been committed to supplying hospitals with future-proof patient privacy that can mitigate short-termism in the healthcare sector. Today, our screen system is the world’s leading hygienic and resource-efficient alternative to curtains.

Our screens are easy and quick to sanitize on-the-spot, contributing to a cleaner environment with minimal workflow disruptions. On the contrary, curtains need to be exchanged regularly. Over time, this process accrues a significant amount of labour, expenses, energy and waste. Click HERE to learn more.

Silentia’s 5 Design Principles for future-proof patient privacy:
1. Hygiene: We design for optimal and easy infection control and care.
2. Safety: Our products are stable, reliable, and user-friendly.

22 November: Enhance Your Understanding of Sustainable Healthcare

Welcome to this year's third training in sustainable healthcare!

This half-day training provides you with knowledge on how to work with sustainability, the environment and corporate social responsibility in healthcare. It will give you an understanding of how to create sustainable healthcare, from organisation to environmental legislation. You will get basic knowledge about waste, transportation, chemicals and other crucial environmental issues for increased sustainability work in healthcare. If you participate as a consultant or supplier to the healthcare sector, you will get an insight into the opportunities and obstacles that exist.

Sustainable healthcare includes everything from reducing emissions from pharmaceuticals into the environment, to energy efficiency in hospital buildings.
