Starting Point for DAPHNE – Interreg Europe Project to Decarbonise the Healthcare Sector

Among 8 organisations from 7 EU countries, NCSH is participating in the Interreg Europe project DAPHNE. Today marks the starting point for the project, carried out by an online kick-off with our interregional partners.

Recognising healthcare as a hugely energy-intensive sector, DAPHNE sets out to improve 6 national/regional/local authorities' capacity to design and implement better healthcare policies – focused specifically on decarbonisation.

To do this, the project will both chart a course to decarbonisation as well as identify breakthrough technologies and innovative tools that could be scaled-up to accelerate the healthcare sector's energy transition.

We at NCSH function as an overall European advisory organisation and will support the participating national/regional/local authorities with matters related to technical solutions, policy implementation and best practices.

The project closes in 2028.

NCSH in India: Launching 'Green Hospital' Initiative with Partner MAMTA

These first weeks of February 2024, we at NCSH are presenting the preliminary results and recommendations from our hospital audits on-site in November 2023, to the administrations of the Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh states in India. The purpose is to define the next steps needed to develop 'Green Hospitals' in the regions, in collaboration with our partner Mamta Health Institute for Mother and Child (MAMTA HIMC).

1707223490453Meeting with the administration of Uttar Pradesh, 6 February 2024.

MAMTA about the on-site audits and meetings: “The Govt. of HP Health Department is charting a sustainable path with the launch of 'Green Hospital', an innovative initiative in collaboration with MAMTA & Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare. Honoured to be part of the discussion, as we convene under the leadership of the Secretary of Health to shape the future course of action for a healthier and greener tomorrow.”

The visit to India – as well as its aftermath – is further part of the NCSH model to establish a baseline for more sustainable hospitals and healthcare in low- and middle-income countries, using the Nordics as a reference point.

ncsh model

Alongside November's audits at the health facilities in Himachal Pradesh and Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), we were also invited to rewarding meetings with the Health Department officials in Shimla and the officials at the Health Department in Lucknow – discussing energy and climate-smart solutions for their vast number of hospitals and the many new ones being built soon. The interest in Nordic experience in the area is evident, made even clearer by the fact that NCSH's and MAMTA's visit were featured in a national Indian newspaper.

Press Release: New Horizon Europe Project 'KitNewCare'

NCSH is happy to announce that we are a partner in the Horizon Europe project 'KitNewCare: Pioneering Transformation in Kidney Healthcare Sustainability Across Europe'

A new EU-funded project – KitNewCare – aims to help health and care systems better embrace environmental sustainability and climate-neutrality, with a focus on kidney care. The project runs from January 2024 to December 2027.

At the heart of this initiative is a pressing issue: healthcare systems are significant contributors to carbon emissions, accounting for approximately 5–11 % of the total at global level. Within this context, kidney care emerges as an ideal candidate for systemic change due to its substantial disease burden, resource footprint and well-defined care pathways and ecosystem.

KitNewCare tackles the challenge head-on, identifying and addressing the major health, environmental, financial, and social hotspots in healthcare. The project goes beyond the traditional focus on building energy use – where carbon reduction has been historically concentrated – targeting the broader aspects of products, services and pathways that form a significant part of the carbon footprint. The project employs a systematic approach to pilot and benchmark interventions, holistically assessing their effectiveness, and aligning with major EU initiatives which call for the development, implementation, and upscaling of sustainable solutions throughout the healthcare landscape.

"The KitNewCare project represents a pivotal step towards aligning kidney care with sustainable healthcare goals, both at national level and in line with the EU Green Deal's objectives," stated Brett Duane, Project Coordinator and Principal Investigator at Trinity College Dublin. "Our vision is to revolutionise healthcare practices by introducing sustainable technologies and methodologies that minimise environmental impact without compromising patient care. By embedding social responsibility and environmental consciousness into our work, we aim not only to improve patient outcomes but also pave the way for a more sustainable healthcare sector. We believe that KitNewCare, with the expertise of our European partners, will serve as a beacon of sustainability, inspiring others to adopt sustainable practices and foster a greener healthcare future."

A key element of KitNewCare's approach is the involvement of a range of stakeholders – including patients, healthcare professionals, NGOs, industry partners, and policymakers. Integral to this approach is the development of training and capacity-building materials, as well as policy briefs and recommendations. The former aims at providing training in sustainable skills to different health and care professionals across the EU. The latter will provide guidelines to support ongoing and future policy strategies and agendas to decarbonise the EU healthcare system.

Furthermore, the establishment of a Sustainability Network will ensure the implementation and upscaling of the project’s innovative approaches beyond its duration. The project commits to establishing evidence-based governance mechanisms, supported by life cycle assessments (LCAs), providing healthcare professionals tools for benchmarking and measuring sustainability improvements.

Ultimately, KitNewCare aspires to set new standards in kidney care – delivering high-quality, cost-effective, accessible, and sustainable solutions, including technical innovations. The project's end vision extends beyond kidney care, aiming to influence other medical fields and contribute to a more sustainable future for the entire healthcare system.

10 February | For the Third Year in a Row: NCSH Co-Organises ICAIM in Mumbai

Continued collaboration for green hospitals in India

NCSH is proud to be part of the ICAIM 2024 "Leveraging Information Technology for Sustainability in Agriculture and Healthcare – Women Empowerment", taking place in Mumbai on February 10th–11th. In a joint effort together with Mamta Health Institute for Mother and Child, one of the focus areas will be how green hospitals transformation can improve women's access to maternal health services in India.

About ICAIM 2024

In an intensely connected world, where information is barely a click away, the importance of ignorance being a bliss has no standing. With an ocean of information, ideally the world should be empowered enough to have nil existence of any sort of negativity. However, the facts are different. Today every individual needs support to prove their existence. Every individual needs Empowerment.

Empowerment is the level of independence bestowed on an individual or community which enables them to exhibit their interests and become stronger and confident to take charge of their rights freely and responsibly. An empowered nation is a representation of empowered individuals in that nation.

The global statistics claims that the ratio of men to women is literally 1:1. However, this ratio does not reflect the empowerment aspect. Even today women are considered unequal to men. Whether it is job front or the home front, women are deprived. There is evident need for improvement in social, political, health, financial and educational status of women. There is need for Women Empowerment.

Women are an integral part of every domain, including healthcare and agriculture. There are several women who have made history in general and in healthcare and agriculture domains in specific. Yet, there are cases where large population of women and children are deprived of basic nutritional and health facilities.

It is time that Women should be given equal status and empowered to build nations that converge into a world filled with positivity and prosperity.

Information Technology (IT) will play a pivotal role to empower women. ICAIM 2024 focuses on the leverage of IT for empowering Women across every stratum.

New Member: Doctors for the Environment Skåne

In 2019, the local association of Doctors for the environment formed in Skåne, Sweden – today, we are happy to welcome them as a new member in the NCSH network!

"Läkare för miljön Skåne (Doctors for the environment Skåne) is a part of the national organization defending our environment both locally and globally to prevent illness, ensure the necessary conditions for health and improve quality of life. The healthcare sector itself stands for a significant impact on the climate, making a just transition our priority to align with our oath as doctors to 'first do no harm'.

With our work we want to stimulate greater awareness for health questions in the climate debate and educate health care workers to take responsibility and step up their game. As the Lancet countdown just stated again in their annual report 'climate change is the greatest global health threat facing the world in the 21st century, but it is also the greatest opportunity to redefine the social and environmental determinants of health'. In 2015, countries committed to limit global warming to 'well below 2 degrees Celsius' as part of the landmark Paris Agreement. We have a long way to go to reach this goal.

Please join us in this shared mission and feel free to reach out for questions or cooperation."

New Member: Sahlgrenska University Hospital

Sahlgrenska University Hospital (Region Västra Götaland) is joining the NCSH network!

Based in Gothenburg, Sahlgrenska University Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Northern Europe. The hospital describes their extensive organisation below:

"Sahlgrenska University Hospital has approximately 17,000 employees and about 65,000 operations are performed annually. Our operations, Orthopedic Technology and Sterile Technology are part of Sahlgrenska with around 140 employees. These are divided into one Orthopedic Technology and three Sterile Technology units. Orthopedic technology serves the hospital's patients and the whole of Gothenburg with orthopedic aids such as corsets, leg / arm prostheses and foot insoles and has approximately 11,000 patient visits annually. Sterilteknik has three Sterilization Centers, one for each hospital area (Sahlgrenska, Mölndal and Östra) where we each year wash, check and sterilize around 150,000 grids and specially packaged instruments that are used during surgery and reception visits within the hospital.

The environmental work within our units follows the guidelines developed by the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and we focus on machine processes, chemicals as well as the work that the staff do on a daily basis to minimize the environmental impact. The three Sterile Centers are relatively rebuilt or newly built and have been optimized with regard to electricity and water consumption through automated lighting and annual validations of the machinery.

The hot water from the dish-disinfectors has been reused for general heating since six months ago, meaning it contributes positively to the hospital's total environmental footprint.

During the autumn 2023, we have increased instrument handling at the Sterile Centers. The reason is a change in progress within the entire University Hospital to phase out disposable instruments, including round bowls, scissors and forceps that are used for small interventions in care wards and receptions.

To promote responsible waste management, our operations have implemented the recycling and waste sorting programs available at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. These efforts not only reduce waste to landfill but also conserve natural resources by promoting recycling.

The employees in Orthopedic Technology work in different receptions and use the unit's electric bicycles for their daily transport between the three hospitals (Sahlgrenska, Mölndals and Östra)."

New Member: SNKOZ

It is a pleasure to announce that we are formalising our long collaboration with SNKOZ – the Association of Non-Medical Health Care Personnel – as they now become a member in the NCSH network. Read about SNKOZ's work below:

"The Association of Non-Medical Health Care Personnel was established in Chorzów in 2011.

The founding meeting was attended by 23 representatives of medical facilities from all over Poland.

With that, the only organization in the country which aims to consolidate the communities of managers of non-medical departments of treatment facilities – building a new quality and a new image of health care services – was created. The aim of the Association is to conduct socially useful activities in the field of health protection and promotion, activities that support the development of technology, invention and innovation, as well as the dissemination and implementation of new technical, management and organizational solutions in economic practice, as well as in ecology.

The assumptions of our Association further include creating conditions for education and improving the qualifications of non-medical staff. There is also an urgent need, according to the founders, to improve the efficiency as well as the organizational and financial savings of medical facilities.

The Association of Non-Medical Health Care Personnel cooperates closely with the "National Medical Review". The result of the cooperation is the Modern Technical Division Congress, organized once a year. This meeting is addressed to directors of technical departments in hospitals, managers of operational departments and managers of medical equipment departments.

In 2016, the Congress was organized under the slogan: Directions for improving the functioning of health care units: computerization and energy efficiency."
