New Member: Research Group on Development of Intelligent Environments

We are happy to welcome Research Group on Development of Intelligent Environments at Middlesex University to the NCSH network!

What is the focus of Research Group on Development of Intelligent Environments?

"
The aim of our group is to advance the scientific understanding of the challenges associated with developing Intelligent Environments. By Intelligent Environment we mean “… one in which the actions of numerous networked controllers (controlling different aspects of an environment) is orchestrated by self-programming pre-emptive processes (e.g., intelligent software agents) in such a way as to create an interactive holistic functionality that enhances occupants experiences.”(1)

We do more fundamental research, for example in Context-awareness, and also in applied areas, such as Smart Homes, Ambient Assisted Living, and Smart Cities. We do all of these from Person-Centric Computing perspective. One of our areas of emphasis is in relation to health and well-being where we have conducted various projects, some funded by UK/EU programmes.

New Member: Praktikertjänst

NCSH's newest addition provides long-term sustainable care all over Sweden – welcome Praktikertjänst!

They introduce themselves to the network below:

"
Praktikertjänst is one of Sweden's largest dental and healthcare providers with over 60 years of experience. The company has about 7,300 employees providing care to patients at our circa 730 clinics all over Sweden – from Ystad in the south to Kiruna in the north.

Praktikertjänst is owned by about 1,300 shareholders, of which all are practitioners: doctors, dentists, nurses, physiotherapists, and many more professions. Praktikertjänst's company vision is to achieve sustainable care all throughout Sweden.

At Praktikertjänst, sustainability is a key pillar in the business strategy. As a dental and healthcare provider, requirements regarding environmental management and quality assurance are stringent and ever increasing.

Praktikertjänst already has several well-established processes and routines in place throughout the organisation – from adequate hazardous waste management of mercury to the assessments of occupational health and safety risks and radiation safety protocols. Over the coming years, Praktikertjänst will take efforts to deepen the company's understanding of the impact on the environment and on society, as well as of how the surroundings impact the company, for example through the assessment of physical climate risks and Praktikertjänst's capacity to uphold the responsibility as a dental and healthcare provider.

Given the developments in the EU, such as the Green Deal with new legislation (including the CSRD and the CSDDD), Praktikertjänst is facing ever increasing requirements that go beyond what is already in place through the management system. The developments are about transparent reporting in accordance with the CSRD as well as a corporate sustainability due diligence process in accordance with the CSDDD, both of which will require actions on many levels.

Corporate sustainability in the dental and healthcare sectors is challenging and Praktikertjänst's sustainability efforts are still in its early stages. Praktikertjänst believes that the Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare can provide the company with a forum for discussion and knowledge exchange, knowing that many of the members have already tried and tested several different solutions.

Grønnköpingkið Mondays: New Solution from MedicSolution

The world's greenest hospital – Grønnköpingkið – can now boast with a new sustainable and innovative solution, already in use at multiple locations in Sweden:

Prefabricated modular facilities for healthcare and research by MedicSolution.

"MedicSolution has for many years contributed to a more flexible healthcare where our prefabricated modules have solved the capacity in an efficient way. Up to 50 % faster than on-site built and removable to efficiently adapt the building to new needs or to be moved to another site.

Example of room types/facilities:
Operating theaters, CSSD, diagnostics imaging units (MRI, CT, X-ray etc.), ICUs, clean rooms, and bespoke facilities.

The modules are produced off-site in a safe and clean factory environment and the result meets at least the same high standard as building on-site.

In case of permanent construction or use, our modules can be adopted to increase flexibility and thereby enable the facility to meet current needs over time."

The NCSH Model

How can green hospitals be developed? We at NCSH have created a hands-on model precisely for the purpose of answering this question.

Our model contributes to the establishment of hospitals with more efficient resource use and less impact on the environment, while ensuring quality in the care for patients and in the working environment for staff. The steps apply to new as well as already existing hospitals and healthcare facilities – and can be custom-made to fit specific contextual needs and conditions around the world.
