DAPHNE E-NEWS

In the newletter:

The DAPHNE project represents a valuable opportunity to have a significant impact and promote positive and sustainable change.

By promoting the adoption of an integrated approach, DAPHNE stimulates the design and implementation of high-impact actions (energy supply, renewable sources, facilities and operations, supply chain, waste management, etc.) that contribute to the progressive decabornization of the healthcare sector.

In this context and to achieve the general objective of the project, the partners cooperate at an interregional level to achieve the following specific objectives:

  • chart a path towards the decarbonization  of the healthcare  sector, providing for multiple interventions to implement high-impact integrated actions;
  • identify innovative technologies and tools that could accelerate the energy transition in the sector.

Among 8 partner organisations from 7 EU countries, we at NCSH function as an overall European advisory organisation. We will support the partners to exchange experiences, conducting dialogues with national/regional/local authorities, and identifying the best technical solutions, and practices.

New Member: Danish Regions

Just across the bridge from NCSH's office in Malmö is Denmark, which also happens to be the country of residence of our newest member: Danish Regions!

"
Danish Regions is the interest organization for the five regions in Denmark. The organization is headed by a board of elected regional politicians. The board also elects committees covering various topics, such as the Health Committee and the Committee for Environment and Climate. Danish Regions's overall mission is to safeguard the interests of the regions within healthcare, social affairs, regional development, environment, and climate. The organization also negotiates the annual financial frames of the regions with national government. And it negotiates pay and working conditions for regional employees.

In January 2024, Danish Regions published a new strategy for sustainable hospitals. With the strategy, the five Danish regions have set a common goal to reduce hospitals' consumption-based emissions by 50 percent in 2035 compared to 2022 and to achieve net zero in 2050. The strategy contains three action tracks: 1) procurement, 2) circular economy and behavior, and 3) energy, transport, and buildings. Central to the implementation of the strategy is staff involvement and education, data and monitoring, and partnerships with the national government, industry, and relevant organizations. The strategy has initiatives with focus on respectively medical equipment, surgery, pharmaceuticals, patient and staff meals, waste, laboratories, construction, and digitalization.

Besides the strategy for sustainable hospitals, Danish Regions also cooperate with the municipalities and other stakeholders about the green transition in society.

The NCSH Team Has Gained a Project Officer

A valuable addition to our office this week: Evelien Fiselier is joining the team as NCSH's project officer!

With competencies in five foreign languages and extensive international work experiences, Evelien's biggest strengths lie in the establishment of new connections and collaborations for NCSH and its broad network. She is currently involved in organising the annual Nordic Conference on Sustainable Healthcare and contributes to the overall implementation of NCSH's current projects, including DAPHNE, DesHealth and KitNewCare.

Evelien's educational background is in tourism and sustainable development with a focus on behavioural change. She previously had a role “on-the-ground” as a sustainability officer setting up a baseline greenhouse gas emissions report as a first step to achieving institutional climate neutrality, as well as a research role working on projects on sustainable public (food) procurement, sustainable digitalisation and education for sustainable development.

One of Evelien's last projects included facilitating city-to-city exchanges on public food procurement between three cities in Latin America and Africa and three cities in Europe. In these settings, she worked together with high-level organisations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the German Commission for UNESCO, the Goethe Institute as well as cross-sectoral actors from across the world.

Now she is ready to apply her expertise to a sustainable healthcare setting!

NCSH in New Vinnova Project

Together with our partner Mediplast, NCSH is now leading the project Green Design in Single Use Items: The Case of the Improvement of the Mediplast Vomit Bag – a Vinnova-funded project seeking to contribute to sustainable development in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and medical technology products.

The sustainable development of the Mediplast Vomit Bag can substantially decrease the generated waste (including hazardous waste) at healthcare facilities, having a direct impact on the environment (CO2 emissions) and the economy of the healthcare sector. At the same time, designing and manufacturing the product will foster collaboration and awareness of the importance of sustainable design in single use items.

New Members: Ng Teng Fong General Hospital & Jurong Community Hospital

Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Jurong Community Hospital are the first hospitals in Singapore to be designed and built together from the ground up as an integrated healthcare development.

And today, they are joining the NCSH network!

"
The 700-bed Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) and 400-bed Jurong Community Hospital (JCH) were envisioned to transform the way healthcare is provided to the community and designed to deliver patient-centred services in a seamless and integrated manner. They complement each other for better patient care, greater efficiency, and convenience. The hospital planning process considered how patient care, treatment and rehabilitation may continue seamlessly between the two hospitals.

Podcast Episode Live: NCSH Interviewed by Strategy&

You can now listen to a new podcast episode by Strategy&, featuring an interview with NCSH's Daniel Eriksson.

To the episode

The interviewer Dr. Thomas Solbach says:

"Based in Malmö, and with over 20 years of expertise in healthcare sustainability, Daniel is truly a remarkable thought leader in this field.

Established in 2015, the center aims to address sustainability challenges across various industry sectors, including life sciences, MedTech, hospital management, and architecture. Through collaboration among companies, hospitals, universities, NGOs, and other stakeholders, the center’s ultimate goal is to create a more sustainable healthcare sector and share best practices, green solutions, and Nordic knowledge on a global scale, while also learning from other regions.

During our conversation, Daniel beautifully summed up the center's mission as an arena where the greenest ideas and solutions come together to collaborate, rather than compete. One of their most intriguing projects is "the world's greenest hospital" Grønnköpingkið - a digital hospital set to operate in 2025."
