Covid-19, Climate Change and Supply Chain Resiliency 

On November 10th, the first webinar in a series of webinars and moderated discussions was arranged in a collaboration between Yale Program on Healthcare Environmental Sustainability and the Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare.

The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities in the global healthcare supply chain. Supply chain shocks stem from both interruptions in manufacturing and transport, and surges in demand for drugs and materials greatly exceeding supply capacity. The urgent adaptation to the COVID-19 pandemic presents opportunities for establishing a more robust and resilient supply chain, with lessons drawn from the sustainable healthcare movement to address both mitigation and adaptation to climate change. Energy solutions for people and the planet
MegaWatt Solutions Nordic AB is a Swedish renewable energy solution company that was founded in 2016. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of BrainHeart Energy Group. MegaWatt Solutions is a leading turn-key energy solution provider with a vision for radical change within the energy industry. We seek to disrupt the traditional energy market and provide a secure, efficient and inexpensive supply of renewable energy, while also helping society to massively reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, and support national and global climate targets.

Our energy solution is -- the EBox
MegaWatt Solutions provides large industrialized technology, by harvesting the sun’s energy and using bedrock as a heat reservoir that is accessed via drilled boreholes. We use traditional ground source heat pumps (GSHP), if needed, combine with photovoltaic thermal (PVT) system to provide industrial sized energy solution. Our system is completely decentralized, modular, highly efficient and stand-alone. We call it the “EBox”. The EBox is pre-manufactured, a “plug and play” megawatt-level renewable energy solution with high performance and long life span. Our EBox connect to boreholes, deliver heating and hot water to large real estate properties. The EBox is equipped with numerous control features, monitor the energy performance of entire system. The control system in the EBox is connected with MegaWatt cloud SCADA system.

The fourth Nordic Know-How report is here, this time on the topic of ventilation in healthcare. 

Ventilation is big part of the energy-use in a hospital, and healthcare facilities set high demands when it comes to the right ventilation for the right purpose. Efficient and high-performance ventilation is crucial in order to avoid spread of infections and reduce exposure to contaminants. This chapter focuses on ventilation in hospitals and healthcare environments and how to work with ventilation in a sustainable, energy efficient and safe way. The report contains of some background information about ventilation and its environmental impact, as well as examples of different technologies and installations in Swedish hospitals.

In connection to the release of this chapter, we arranged a webinar on the 20th of October to discuss the topic a bit more together with competent speakers from Avidicare, Lindinvent, OCO Nordic and Enjay. Before the webinar we also talked to some Swedish hospitals and regions and asked them a few questions about challenges regarding ventilation, and the answers were later presented and discussed further during the webinar. 

The webinar was recorded and will soon be available on NCHS's Youtube channel. 

About Nordic Know-How

Nordic Know-How is a report series created by Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare (NCSH), within the project Platform for Internationalisation: Energy and Climate Smart Healthcare. The project is financed by the Swedish Energy Agency. This series consist of several reports which provide an overview of good examples and best practices of sustainable healthcare in the Nordics. Each report has a certain theme relating to a sustainability challenge in the healthcare sector. The purpose of this series is to bring Nordic practices and knowledge to international actors, spreading Nordic expertise in this field to the world.

Om Träffen

Globala hållbarhetsfrågor måste lösa med globala lösningar. Det är inte enbart i tider av pandemi som vi gör mycket arbete på distans. Internationalisering på hemmaplan och digitalisering är viktiga hållbara alternativ till fysisk mobilitet. Under förmiddagen kommer vi att undersöka hur man kan arbeta internationellt med hållbarhet. Genom exportsamarbete kan vi lära oss tillsammans vilka fallgropar man kan undvika genom internationell samverkan. Träffen riktar sig till dig som arbetar med hållbarhet, exportlösningar och kommunikation i både stora och små verksamheter.

Denna halvdagsutbildning ger dig kunskap om hur du arbetar med miljö, hållbarhet och företagens sociala ansvar inom hälso- och sjukvården. Den ger dig förståelse för vad som skapar en hållbar hälso- och sjukvård från organisation till miljölagstiftning. Du kommer att få grundläggande kunskaper om avfall, transporter, kemikalier och andra viktiga miljöfrågor för ökat hållbarhetsarbete. Om du deltar som konsult eller leverantör till hälso- och sjukvården får du en god inblick i de möjligheter och hinder som finns. 

En hållbar hälso- och sjukvård omfattar allt från att minska utsläppen av läkemedel i miljön, till energieffektivisering i sjukhusbyggnader. Under kursen har du som deltagare möjlighet att lyfta frågor som rör ditt arbets- och ansvarsområde och diskutera detta. Efter kursen har du fått en djupare kunskap om de hållbarhetsutmaningar som finns inom hälso- och sjukvården och hur du arbetar med dessa frågor. 

För vem?

Miljörepresentanter, miljösamordnare, miljöchefer, ledande befattningshavare och andra anställda inom privat och offentlig sektor. Vårdgivare som behöver större inblick i arbetsmetoderna inom hälso- och sjukvården, fokusområdena och utmaningarna. Konsulter, jurister, revisorer som arbetar med hållbarhet och har hälso- och sjukvården som kundgrupp. 

Daniel är VD på Stiftelsen TEM i Malmö och har arbetat med hållbarhetsfrågor inom hälso- och sjukvården i över 10 år. Han är grundare av Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare och har suttit i flera internationella styrelser. Daniel har utbildat tusentalt chefer, miljörepresentanter och medarbetare inom hälso- och sjukvården och har arbetat med ett stort antal sjukhus och regioner, både nationella som internationella. Han har även arbetat med svensk export av miljöteknik och har gjort revisioner inom hälso- och sjukvården med fokus på lagefterlevnad och ISO 14001. 

The third chapter of the Nordic Know-How series is here, this time on the topic of Lighting in a hospital environment.

The Nordic Know-How report series is created to spread knowledge and raise awareness of different sustainability solutions that can be implemented in a hospital and for example improve energy efficiency, lower the climate impact and make healthcare more sustainable. Previous chapters has focused on nitrous oxide destruction and geothermal energy. This third chapter will focus on Lighting in a hospital environment, what different technologies that are available today and what solutions have proven to be succesful in healthcare facilities. In each chapter, there are some examples of hospitals and a shorter presentation of the solution they are using. 

On September 29, we will arrange a webinar to discuss how lighting can save energy and contribute to a more environmentally sustainable healthcare sector. During the webinar we will hear presentations from Region Kalmar, Hifab, the supplier Glamox and the Swedish Energy Agency.
