Webinar: Nordic Know-How - Geothermal Energy

Join us on June 17th to discuss the topic on the use of geothermal energy in the healthcare sector!

Date: June 17th

Time: 15.00-17.00 (CEST)

Geoenergi omslag

This webinar presents the second Nordic Know-How report, this time on the topic of geothermal energy and the use of such systems in hospitals and other healthcare buildings. Geothermal energy can be both cost efficient and substantially reduce the environmental impact of a building. With this webinar we want to lift the many good examples of installed geothermal energy systems in Swedish hospitals and regions, and how they have reduced the climate impact of the buildings.

This afternoon we will listen to a representative from Region Västernorrland in Sweden, where they have installed a unique system for cooling the County Hospital in Sundsvall with snow. We will also listen to presentations from Energy Machines and ClimaCheck, both which have great knowledge when it comes to the technical part of geothermal energy.

New member - Regional Hospital West Jutland

RM med HE Vest navnetræk dansk RGB 369x249We are happy to welcome another member to Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare - Regional Hospital West Jutland in Denmark!

We let them introduce themselves:

Regional Hospital West Jutland (RHWJ) is part of Central Denmark Region. RHWJ currently consists of 3 regional hospitals (Herning, Holstebro and Lemvig) and 2 Health Centers (Ringkøbing and Tarm), and serves a geographic area of 290.000 citizens. While we are spread out over five different locations, we work together as one unit.
In a few years, though, we will all share the same address. A brand-new hospital is being built as we speak, and the first departments are moving in as soon as 2021. The new hospital will in many ways represent a new start, also when it comes sustainability. New technology is incorporated in the buildings, making it possible to live up to todays energy standards, and to practice energy management. Furthermore we focus om
procurement and waste management (circular economy) as a way of becoming more sustainable. We look forward to the journey.

Welcome!

Sustainable and Smart Healthcare in the Nordics and the Netherlands – What can we learn from each other?

On May 26th, NCSH together with the Dutch NGO Milieu Platform Zorgsector arranges a webinar on sustainable and smart healthcare. With this webinar we aim to foster an exchange of knowledge and expertise between the Nordic countries and the Netherlands.

The current spreading of COVID-19 has revealed vulnerabilities of the healthcare sector, and the need to increase resilience of our hospitals and other healthcare organisations. Sustainable and smart solutions can in many ways contribute to a healthcare sector that is more resource- and cost efficient, which is why it is important to lift and bring attention to the solutions that are already out there and in use.

This webinar is an opportunity to get insight into how hospitals in the Netherlands and in the Nordics work with sustainable and smart solutions. Which solutions have they implemented to reduce their climate impact? What are their biggest challenges in terms of sustainability? What are their ambitions for the future?

Date: May 26th

Time: 14.00-16.00 CEST

Nordic Know How: Nitrous Oxide Destruction

This spring, we are presenting a new series of reports in which each report will focus on a specific solution and best practices within sustainable healthcare. This first chapter will focus on:

Nitrous Oxide Destruction

NKHNordic Know-How is a report series created by Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare within the project Platform for Internationalisation: Energy and Climate Smart Healthcare. The project is financed by the Swedish Energy Agency.

The theme of this first report in the Nordic Know-How series is nitrous oxide destruction. Nitrous oxide substantially contributes to the climate footprint of the healthcare sector. This report provides good examples on how to reduce emissions of nitrous oxide in hospitals, and examples are presented from Swedish municipal regions and hospitals. The examples illustrate what can be done to reduce the emissions of nitrous oxide and thus the climate impact from healthcare facilities.

Each report has a certain theme relating to a sustainability challenge in the healthcare sector, and the purpose of this series is to bring Nordic practices and knowledge to international actors, spreading Nordic expertise in this field to the world.

Webinar: Financing export of sustainable healthcare

This Tuesday, on March 24, we arranged our first webinar focusing on Financing export of sustainable healthcare.

We started this afternoon with an introduction by NCSH, to get an understanding of the global demand for sustainable solutions in healthcare. Therafter NEFCO (The Nordic Environment Finance Corporation) talked about financing international sustainability projects and pilot studies. After that, EKN (the Swedish Export Credit Agency) talked about promoting Swedish export and internationalization of swedish companies. Last but not least, the Swedish Energy Agency talked about financing and internationalization of Energy and Climate smart Healthcare.

At the end of the webinar, we held a short panel discussion focusing on how we can increase export and Internationalization of Sustainable Healthcare by existing and new financing models and how to move forward to boost Sustainable Healthcare as an area for export.

We are planning on having similar webinars later this spring and summer, and in April we will arrange a webinar on nitrous oxide destruction solutions. Keep an eye on the calendar for updated and more detailed information about this webinar.

We say a big thank you to the speakers for interesting presentations and answers to our questions! We also thank all participants for joining this webinar, and hope to see you at our next one as well!

Information: Online activities!

Like many others, we at NCSH have been forced to have a look at our planned activities in the next couple of weeks and in some cases rethink.

Although, we feel positive as technology enables many activities to be conducted online instead, and we think this will be a great alternative in this situation. Therefore, NCSH has no intention on cancelling the planned activities this spring/summer. Instead of meeting in large groups, we will meet online! We see this alternative as an opportunity since it means you don't have to travel to get there, and it also allows us the possibility to invite more participants.

Of course, we will update with more information as soon as each event approaches.

Regarding our next event on March 24: Financing export of sustainable healthcare:

We intend on doing this event online as a webinar, and all registered participants have been given information about this. But, since we have the opportunity to have more participants now, you are more than welcome to email This email address is being protected from spambots. Study visit at Nya Karolinska University Hospital

Last week, on February 11th, NCSH in collaboration with Nya Karolinska university hospital invited members of Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare to a study visit with focus on energy and climate smart solutions at Nya Karolinska in Solna, Stockholm.

The day started with lunch and a short introduction of NCSH and our work within sustainable healthcare. After that Gustav Eriksson, head of environment and safety at Karolinska, gave us an introduction to the hospital and their work. He gave us an overview of all the aspects you need to consider when developing the sustainablility work in a hospital and constant challenges you face. How can you increase circularity? How to make healthcare more accessible to everyone? Can the need for pharmaceuticals be reduced?

Byggnad1 Pres1

After that, we listen to some presentations from Coor, the facility management provider that is responsible for coordinating, developing and supplying workplace- real estate and logistics services at the hospital. We got to learn more about the technology and logistics systems, which in many cases are automated. The majority of all transports within the hospital are made with automatic trucks (AGV), but manual handling also occurs.

We also heard more about the hospital's energy consumption, ventilation and medical gases. We briefly went through the process of creating an energy model that helps calculate how much energy the hospital needs to function. The energy at Nya Karolinska largely comes from a borehole warehouse located in the hospital area. In the borehole layer, heat energy can be stored from summer to winter and cooling energy from winter to summer. Electric heat pumps allow energy to be used to heat and cool the hospital. Complement and redundancy are also available in district heating and district cooling.

bild3 Bild4

After this interesting review of the hospital, we had a guided tour where we got the chance to have a look at the heat pump systems, see the energy control room, meet the automated trucks that drive around in the hospital culverts to pick up and leave laundry, food carts and much more.

Bild5 Bild6

We say thank you to Karolinska and Coor for taking the time to tell us about their work and show us around, and also thank you to all the members who participated in the study visit!
