India - a market for sustainable Healthcare

0001232019 is “India - Sweden Health year” which sums up a 10 years memorandum of understanding on collaboration between the two countries. To celebrate this occasion a Swedish delegation, headed by the Swedish Social minister Lena Hallengren, visited New Delhi 22-25 of February. The agreement was renewed, and many new connections were made to continue collaboration.

Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare had the opportunity to join the delegation with the objective to investigate how Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare can start up activities in India. India is included in the strategy for the project -Platform for Internationalization: Energy- and Climate smart healthcare and is one of the strategic markets to identify partners and develop strategies within sustainable healthcare.

India is one of the largest countries in the world and diverse in many aspects. The Indian population is 1,35 billion people and one of the fastest growing economies. The population of young people is growing and many of the poor has connection to internet via smart phones. Healthcare services stands for about 1% of GDP which is one of the lowest numbers in the world. EU has a corresponding number at about 10%. A new reform -Modicare- is taking place right now to offer free healthcare to everyone that have not been able to pay for the services before. This will give additional 500 million people access to the healthcare system.

The delegation had the opportunity to visit the AIIMS Hospital I Jodhpur. All India Institute of Medical Science. It is a newly built hospital including nursing college, research and teaching as well as hospital services taking care of 2500 patients each day. There had been several AIIMS hospitals built up to date and more planned throughout India. The AIIMS hospitals will even out the unbalance of reaching patients throughout the country.
Meeting an increasing demand of healthcare from the whole population require new innovations and business models. Treatments must become cheaper, scaled up and sustainable.

Increasing demand of healthcare will have an impact on energy consumption and the climate. Indian hospitals are being equipped with the same technology as any other modern hospital. This will of course require a stable infrastructure supporting the hospital, energy grid with renewable energy and indoor climate control systems with cooling and heating. And as always: saving energy means saving money which enables more resources for treatments.
To reach the UN Sustainability development goals, from a worldwide perspective it would not be enough if Sweden goes 100% sustainable on its own. To be serious about reaching the goals we must work together in a larger scale. If India can implement sustainable solutond to its growing healthcare sector based on Swedish technology and experience, Hospitals can be used as a leverage to increase sustainability in cities and in society in general.

1Next steps:
During the delegation to India NCSH have made connections with Indian and Swedish organizations that can lead to future activities in India, available for the members in NCSH to join. We plan to take part in the Indian-Swedish collaboration as well as developing our own connections at a project level. Discussions on how to proceed are ongoing.

If you are interested in India as amarket and taking part in future activities. Please let us know. Contact: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Greetings from the Minister of Social Affairs!

We had the priveledge to recieve a greeting from the the Swedish Minister of Social Affairs, Lena Hallengren, during the kick off for our platform for internationalization of energy efficient healthcare. Unfortunately, she could not take part in person but sent us a video in which she explains the importance of creating a sustainable future and the importance of new investments, technologies and innovations to allow healthcare to contribute in the fight against climate change.

Workshop - The most sustainable healthcare in the world 2030 - Malmö - Conclusions

20190328 110923On march 28, the second workshop was organized in Malmö for the project ”The most sustainable healthcare in the world 2030” funded by The Swedish Innovation Agency - Vinnova.

In this project, NCSH works together with partners Medeon, Medicon Village, Swecare and Sahlgrenska Science Park to make a pre-study. It will be the basis for creating a vision to achieve the most sustainable healthcare in the world by 2030 and establish an arena for innovation, collaboration and communication of swedish sustainable healthcare.

The day started with an introduction to sustainable healthcare and NCSH by Daniel Eriksson, founder of NCSH. After the introduction, we listened to Ralf Schmitt, Corporate Head of Sustainability, Getinge. He talked about Getinges way to sustainability, different approaches and how to create a sustainable value. After that, it was time for Johan Brun, Senior Medical Advisor, The research-based pharmaceutical industry (LIF). Some of the questions she talked about was how to reach a fully sustainable use of pharmaceuticals and how to reach sustainability througout the entire chain.

20190328 100703After a small coffee break, we listened to Peter Kelly, International Director, Pharmafilter. He told us about new possible solutions for dealing with waste and wastewater. The next person on stage was Louise Strand, Purchasing Director, Region Skåne. Louise talked about the different dimensions of sustainability and how to introduce sustainability in the procurement.

Last but not least, we got the chance to listen to four shorter presentations about the challenges in sustainable healthcare. First was Thomas Bäckström, BTB Emulsions, who talked about perfect emulsions with people, profit, planet in mind. Lars Malmgren, Medarca, talked about how to secure the drug activities and taking away manual administration within elderly care. Pete Andersen, Watersprint, told us about a intelligent water purification and last was Peter Höjerback, Avidicare. He told us about a unique system for ultra-clean air in operating theatres.

When the last presentation was finished, everyone got to sit in smaller groups in a workshop to discuss thoughts and ideas. These were later shared and discussed with the rest of the groups before it was time for lunch.

The results from the workshop then? It will be presented in the final report, the roadmap and the vision! So stay tuned for future updates from the project.

We thank everyone who participated, and especially all the speakers for interesting presentations!

We welcome Jessa Hospital to NCSH

logo jessa witWe are happy to add one more member and also one more country to our memberlist, Jessa hospital in Belgium.

They present themself:

The Jessa Hospital offers a wide range of innovative & high-quality medicine and patient care as a reference hospital, in collaboration with the partner hospitals in its network. We want to offer warm care to our patient & his family and actively involve them; both in the individual care process and in the policy of the hospital.

The hospital has 981 approved beds and 260 day places, spread over 4 campuses. This makes us one of the 5 largest non-university hospitals in Flanders, Belgium. With more than 380 doctors & physician specialists in training and more than 3100 employees, Jessa is the largest employer in Limburg.

In addition to all the traditional medical specialties offered in most hospitals, the hospital also offers a large number of reference functions - highly specialized, top clinical services and sub-specializations that are not offered in every hospital. This usually concerns treatments that require advanced equipment, special facilities and / or specific expertise, with a usually supra-regional character. For many of these specialties, the Jessa Hospital works closely with the hospitals in the region in order for a further expanding of the South West Limburg clinical network.

Some of our reference functions are: cardio surgery (incl. Minimally invasive surgery), Heart Center, Kidney dialysis, Hematology (incl. Sterile chambers), Oncology, Radiotherapy, Breast clinic, Neurosurgery, Infectious diseases & immunity, Travel Clinic, Abdominal surgery (incl. Rectum surgery, liver surgery), Center for molecular diagnostics, next generation sequencing (for personalized cancer treatments), Rehabilitation center for non-congenital brain disorders & amputation, Psychogeriatrics, Urology (oncology, andrology, reconstructive surgery, pediatric urology), ORL (incl. Cochlear implant),  Ophthalmology (incl. Retinal surgery), Various child and youth medicine sub-specializations: neurology, gastrointestinal diseases, endocrinology, asthma & allergies, children's obesity center, growth disorders, diabetes, pediatric cardiology, etc.

For optimum patient care, we also work with primary care providers on a daily basis. Jessa is also part of the Flemish Hospital Network KULeuven and Hospilim, the partnership of Limburg hospitals. There is also close cooperation between the PXL university and Uhasselt. Continuous investment in top-quality medical technology, IT, quality, patient involvement and skilled doctors & employees is the cornerstone of Jessa Hospital's policy. In April 2016, Jessa was the first Belgian hospital to obtain the international NIAZ-Qmentum accreditation for the entire operation of the hospital. Meanwhile, our third consecutive NIAZ accreditation.

Jessa in numbers:

  • 981 beds
  • 260 day places
  • 3100 employees - 2260 FTE
  • 390 doctors & assistants - 100 admitted doctors
  • 36500 admissions & 60000 daily admissions
  • 45,000 emergency patients per year
  • 200,000 unique patients per year
  • ± 1300 patients per day

Welcome Dinair!

We are happy to welcome our newest member, Dinair, to the Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare! Below, Dinair explains how their operations contribute to creating a more sustainable healthcare environment.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is Critical to Patient and Worker Safety:
Clean air is vital in hospital and healthcare facility operations to protect patients, staff and visitors from airborne diseases and infections, as well as to provide a comfortable, healthy and odour-free environment. The Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in the facility, referring to the air breathed by the building’s occupants, is of primary importance because of patients’ suppressed immune systems, making them more susceptible to adverse health effects. Poor IAQ ranks as one of the top five environmental risks to public health.

Airfilter solutions for Sustainable Healthcare:
Energy consumption of airfilter in HVAC system and operating theaters has become a focus of attention due to high energy prices, downtimes and demands for reducing CO2 emmisions. Related to the ventilation systems total energy consumption, airfilter have a significant part of this consumption. Correct choice of Airfilters will directly have impact of the sustainability.

Welcome Enjay!

We are happy to welcome Enjay as new members in Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare

Real estate owners throw away 10s of thousands of euro and many tons of fossile CO2 in saving today. Due to grease and soot in the warm exhaust air from restaurant ventilation its not possible to recover the energy. Enjay has developed and patented Lepido, the first maintenance free energy recovery unit in the world that can, without any pre-filtration, stand this hostile environment and be able to deliver the energy back into the building either as heat and/or AC saving a lot of money and environment. With a typical ROI of 2 years we believe that we have created a financial incentive to part of the environmental movement.
