On October 5th we will organize a study tour to Skaraborgs Sjukhus Skövde hosted by Västra Götalands regionen with focus on Energy efficency and resource management. It's a half-day study tour and half-day presentations from representatives from both Västra Götalandsregionen and Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare.

The Swedish Energy Agency is funding a Swedish national Innovation Cluster hosted and managed by the NCSH. The cluster was formed in 2016 and is currently under developement. The energy cluster is mapping best-practice for Swedish energy efficent healthcare. We are trying to get at least one good example from each Swedish region. If you are a region, a hospital or a company that have a project, installment, a new building, a new innovation, a new method etc that you feel are a best-practice, please contact us. On January 30th, we welcomed 15 environmental managers/coordinators from Region Copenhagen to Malmö and NCSH for a study visit. The aim of the day for Region Copenhagen was to get input and inspiration in the area of healthcare waste management.

We started the day at TEM/NCSH:s office in Malmö where Daniel Eriksson from TEM/NCSH gave a presentation on Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare and Sofie Dam from Region Copenhagen gave a presentation on the current work in waste management in Copenhagen healthcare.

Afterwards, a number of speakers presented projects within sustainable healthcare:

• Kristina de Geer, Region Skåne on CO2 reduction and tools for tracking purchases.
• Johan Berhin, Green Furniture on green and sustainable seating.
• Åke Rosén, Gaia Biomaterials on degradable materials an innovation procurement.
• Ida Virtala, Paxxo on their system for waste management.
• Mats Höijertz, Logiwaste on their waste management system.

After the morning session at TEM/NCSH, the group porceeded to Sysav where Rustan Nilsson gave an inspiring lecture on waste, waste streams and waste minimization. Moreover, Sysav presented their system for infectious waste, biologic waste and sharps and needles. The study visit ended with a tour of the facilities and we got to see how and where they handle infectious waste.

In the afternoon, we visited Landskrona Hospital where we focused on waste management in a hospital environment. We were welcomed by Eva Bolinder, environmental manager at SUND, and Irene Winér, environmental coordinator at Landskrona Hospital, who gave us a full presentation on how they structure and manage the different waste streams. During an informative study tour we could follow the waste from wards to the different containers from where the waste is transported from the hospital.

We had a fantastic day at the first Nordic Conference on Sustainable Healthcare at Münchenbryggeriet in Stockholm last week!

In collaboration with Aktuell Hållbarhet, Dagens Medicin and Bonnier Sustainability Media, Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare organized a one day conference with speakers from all over Europe to focus on the latest developments in areas such as: sustainability priorities at major Nordic hospitals, state of the art Nordic projects, as well as new and innovative solutions on the market in everything from energy efficiency to pharmaceuticals.

During the day we got the chance to listen to many interesting presentations and discussion both on the main stage and during the break-out sessions. For the first time we also got to hand out awards to three outstanding actors for their work in making the healthcare more sustainable. We would like to especially congratulate the NCSH-members Paxxo for winning Sustainable Healthcare company of the year and Landspítali for winning Sustainable Healthcare Organizer of the year!

We are very happy for the interest we received and the opportunity to meet and discuss with so many interesting people and organisations. We are already looking forward to the conference next year! 

A special thanks to all of our partners:

February 16 the first meeting was held for the new Nordic Sustainable Healthcare network at Swedish EPA in Stockholm. Over 30 people participated and we had participants form Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Åland and Faroe Island, so it was truly a Nordic meeting. The network will be a part of Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare and both suppliers and procurers can be members. During the afternoon, a workshop was held and the group discussed on how the network should function and be financed. The interest was very high and the participants had many ideas on areas to focus on during future meetings and workshops. We also had presentations from three members in NCSH, Schneider Electrics, Green Furniture and Iceland University Hospital.

The network follows a previous project funded by Nordic Council of Ministers and the Danish EPA focusing on developing a Nordic Guideline for sustainable textile procurement in healthcare. The guideline will be presented within a few weeks and the result was presented in the morning by David Watson PlanMiljø together with presentations from Marcin Kautsch who presented a work on procurment in Poland and The Nordic Ecolabelwho presented their work.
