The Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare at the CleanMed Europe conference 19/10-21/10 2016

We had some fantastic days at the CleanMed Europe Conference at UN-City in Copenhagen.

The Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare (NCSH) was taking part in the conference to promote the network and its members to an international audience. We were very happy for the interest we received and the opportunity to connect with so many interesting people.

NCSH was represented at the conference with a stand in the exhibition area where we had a good opportunity to speak with people passing by. Many took the opportunity to stop by for a chat about the network and the upcoming conference in February, among other things. It was a good opportunity to reconnect with old friends as well as making new ones.

On the second day of the conference the NCSH was hosting a parallel session on the topic “Highlights from ‘Nordic Sustainable Healthcare’. The idea was to give the audience an introduction to the network, our projects and activities as well as presentations from our members.

We were very happy to see that the auditorium was filled with people and more seats were brought in to make place to everyone.

We had five speakers in the programme.

Daniel Eriksson NCSH/TEM started to give a frame to the topic by giving an introduction to Sustainable Healthcare and how we approach this subject. He then continued with the background to the NCSH, NCSH was launched 2015 June and has grown rapidly to about 50 members from 11 countries. NCSH are together with Bonniers Sustainability Media arranging a Nordic Conference on Sustainable Healthcare 15th of February 2017. Link to presentation

Johannes Brundin NCSH/TEM then spoke about the newly launched Innovation Cluster for Energy Efficient Healthcare. NCSH received grants from the Swedish Energy agency to form a National Innovation Cluster to set up a platform to enhance innovation and export of energy efficiency. Link to presentation

As in most of our seminars and meetings we want to give the audience a smorgasbord of innovations and ideas from our members, companies as well as hospitals. Three of of our members participated as speakers this day: Watersprint, Green Furniture and Oslo University Hospital together with Sykehuspartner.

Linda Kokkola, CEO at Watersprint gave us an insight in water purification and how new UV-LED technology revolutionized the possibility to purify water in a cheap and effective way. Legionella is a wide spread problem in Hospitals and can with a simple installation with Watersprints technology be eliminated. Watersprint are also developing their technology to make clean water available in developing countries. Link to presentation

Johan Berhin, Designer and founder of Green Furniture gave us a inspirational talk about how design and sustainable furniture can contribute to more beautiful and functional hospitals. Johan has developed a concept for interior landscaping where the furniture has much functionality. All aspects are taken in account, from the sourcing of sustainable materials, user friendliness, and design for maintenance and refurbishment. Link to presentation

Trude Ertresvåg, Sykehuspartner and Tore Havellen, Oslo University Hospital gave us an insight in how Nordic Hospitals are working with procurement of chemicals and materials. Chemicals used in Hospitals have a big impact on the environment and Nordic hospitals are working intensively to reduce the use and switch to better alternatives. Tools has been developed to make it easier for the procurement officers to spot products in the system containing undesirable chemicals and then to work with these products to replace them. The management have direct access to the status and can follow up on how each hospital in the region is doing. Link to presentation

The session ended with questions and discussions.

If you have any questions or would like to get in contact with the speakers please contact Johannes Brundin, +46 (0)708 92 73 05 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Climate smart healthcare – a seminar at Media Evolution

Last Thursday, on June 16th, our network the Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare arranged a seminar Climate smart healthcare in partnership with Medeon, Malmö Cleantech City, Medicon Valley Alliance, Energimyndigheten and Swecare.

IMG_20160616_130410.jpg

Daniel Eriksson, the Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare.

Sustainable healthcare is a vast area that includes multiple questions and topics for discussion, and during the event we aimed to cover as many angles as possible. Seminars of this type are particularly crucial today when the issue of sustainable healthcare gains more importance.

One of the challenges of sustainable healthcare is the lack of a holistic approach. Many stakeholders still operate in their own silos in a specific region or country, which ponders development of the sector. The purpose of the seminar was, on the one hand, to provide businesses with a platform to show what’s on the market, to be inspired by new solutions and lay a foundation for possible collaborations, and on the other, to give procurers and authorities an opportunity to get a better overview of innovative products and solutions and meet future business partners.

Speakers from both private and public sectors took part in the discussions. Below, you can find information about the speakers and download some of the presentations  (note that we couldn’t share some of them).

Daniel Eriksson, TEM.

Daniel emphasized the importance of collaborations between different sectors and the possibilities that a sustainable healthcare solution gives the sustainable healthcare stakeholders. Could we even export it?

Eva Bolinder and Karin Lindeberg, Skånevård Sund. Choosing materials sustainably / Hållbart materialval.

A situation analysis conducted at a number of southern Swedish hospitals showed that consumable materials represented 40 % of the operation unit’s climate impact. This resulted in a climate smart guide for the unit’s buyers.

Anders Raginia and Roger Engström, Siemens. ”Ingenuity for life” – smart solutions in existing and new sites / smarta lösningar i existerande och nya anläggningar.

For a sustainable healthcare system, we need to utilize all the potential on the market. Smart choices and shared platforms should be chosen over isolated solutions.

Marie Leuchovius, Region Jönköpings län. Laughing gas, a climate smart investment / Lustgasrening, en klimatsmart investering.

In the Jönköping region, nitrous oxide represents 30 % of CO2 emissions. The regional hospitals required a way to reduce the environmental impact of the usage of the gas. Marie spoke about the region’s experience from procuring a new and untested technology that allows for reductions of CO2-emissions from nitrous oxide.

Olof Jarlman, GH Informatics. Mobility – climate-smart mobile healthcare solutions / klimatsmarta mobila sjukvårdslösningar.

Cloud solutions, mobile technology and flexible resources make it possible to offer global solutions with local services. It’s a Glocal Health concept!

IMG_20160616_144627.jpg

Olof Jarlman, GH Informatics.

Rickard Carlsson, Watersprint. Intelligent water purification / Intelligent vattenrening.

With the use of environmental friendly LED-lights, this company’s solutions purify water by eliminating bacteria and viruses. This means that the problem of legionella which is widely spread in hospital environments can be dealt with in an effectively and environmentally friendly way.

Peter Kelly, Pharmafilter. A cleaner hospital, a cleaner environment.

Pharmafilter’s waste-treatment solution is a simple, safe and clean way to process waste and waste water from the hospitals.

Andrey Bogomolov, Tryggel. Sensible home care through smart energy monitoring.

Tryggel has developed a system that improves life quality of elderly people who live on their own. The system monitors energy consumption of the household and informs relatives or hospital staff about the caretaker’s sleeping pattern etc, thus providing a possible solution to the problems that our society faces today because of the growing number of elderly people.

Ylva Svedenmark, Upphandlingsmyndigheten. Life-Cycle Cost Calculator / LCC.

To help buyers make better decisions when procuring new products and solutions, this life-cycle cost calculator is available for free on Upphandlingsmyndigheten’s website.

Mattias Törnell, Energimyndigheten. Funding for energy efficiency projects / Finansering för energieffektiviseringsprojekt.

There are many opportunities to get funding for energy efficiency projects, and in particular energy efficient healthcare. Moreover, the energy authority can support business development for newly started companies.

Bjørn Bauer, PlanMiljø. Copenhagen University Hospital’s work with climate and environment / Rigshospitalets arbejde med klima og miljø.

A clear structure, long-term and short-term goals and an action plan with specific activities have proven to be a success story within this climate and environment project in Denmark’s largest hospital.

IMG_20160616_162049.jpg

Bjørn Bauer, PlanMiljø.

We thank all participants and speakers for a very interesting afternoon. We look forward to meeting you during our coming activities!

During the next network event, a study visit to Centralsjukhuset Kristianstad on September 27th, we will be able to look at some of the hospital’s energy efficient solutions, gain an unique insight to investments in sustainable healthcare, meet key persons in the process as well as have a closer look on real-life sustainability projects in a hospital environment.

Don’t forget to visit us at CleanMed Eurpope  in Copenhagen on the 19-21 October. NCSH will have a parallel session with speakers from the network. Prodacapo new member

We are proud tp present Prodacapo as a new member in NCSH:

Prodacapo hcProdacapo offers a platform for Value Based Healthcare. Prodacapo has been working closely together with healthcare providers for many years and developed a software solution that helps controlling costs, become more efficient and thereby meet challenges such as providing high quality patient care with less resources and understanding the financial and operational impact of new payment models, care guarantees and patient's choice of care. The software and methodology are based on more than 20 years of experience within ABC costing and performance management.

Prodacapo can assists organizations to track  the costs per patient across the various activities performed in each department. Prodacapo enables service line managers to identify the best solution to optimize the patient care process. In addition, the activity costs are used to calculate the cost per patient, diagnosis or procedures. The data can provide the insight to understand “why” the costs vary for patients with the same diagnosis or procedure. Once this information is available, you can act proactively to identify opportunities for quality improvements and cost reductions by reducing the NVA (Non Value Added) activities.
