Mölnlycke advocates for a holistic approach to sustainable healthcare

At Mölnlycke, we believe that sustainability in healthcare must be assessed through a broad and balanced perspective. True sustainability extends beyond reducing greenhouse gas emissions or minimising waste. It requires an integrated evaluation of the environmental, human, and economic impacts of medical technologies to ensure safe, resilient, and value driven healthcare systems.

A Comprehensive View of Sustainability

We recognise that focusing on single sustainability metrics can lead to tradeoffs that unintentionally compromise patient care, staff wellbeing, or long-term system performance. By evaluating the full sustainability profile of medical technologies, healthcare decisionmakers can strengthen patient safety, support healthcare professionals, and build greater resilience into their organisations.

Mölnlycke’s holistic approach is grounded in three key dimensions:

-Environmental impact: Assessing emissions, water use, waste, and pollution across the full product lifecycle.
-Human impact: Considering patient safety, infection risks, antimicrobial resistance, and staff wellbeing as part of sustainability decision making.
-Economic impact: Evaluating total lifecycle costs, including reprocessing, maintenance, and potential adverse events, to support informed and efficient use of resources.

Introducing Our New Sustainability White paper

To enable the healthcare sector to adopt this broader perspective, Mölnlycke has developed a new sustainability white paper. The document outlines our data driven, patient-centered framework for assessing the sustainability of medical technologies and aims to support more informed, balanced, and resilient decisions across healthcare systems.- framework for assessing the sustainability of medical technologies and aims to support more informed, balanced, and resilient decisions across healthcare systems.

Circadian lighting is now accessible to everyone with Chromaviso’s new Plug & Play concept, Chroma Connect.

Chromaviso has launched Chroma Connect, a new plug & play concept designed to make clinically proven circadian lighting simple to implement in care homes, common rooms, and private residences – without the need for extensive installation or renovation.

The Chroma Connect series includes a range of luminaires developed to support health, well-being, and daily rhythms through automatic 24-hour circadian lighting. The lamps simply connect to a standard power outlet and run automatically throughout the day.

Developed specifically for healthcare environments and elderly care, Chroma Connect combines evidence-based lighting with homely design and intuitive operation. The concept aims to make healthy lighting more accessible and easier to implement in existing environments.

The series currently includes ceiling, floor, and wall-mounted luminaires, all designed to support energy and activity during the daytime while helping maintain healthy circadian rhythms in the evening and night.

At our member Schneider Electric’s Innovation Summit in Copenhagen

The 2025 summit gathered leaders, innovators and changemakers from across industries globally to explore how electrification, automation and digital intelligence are converging to reshape the global energy landscape.

Over two inspiring days, October 22–23, thousands of participants discovered how these forces are driving transformation across homes, workplaces, industries and infrastructure-not at least hospitals-unlocking new possibilities for resilience, sustainability and progress. The event offered a great opportunity to get energized, connect with peers and experience first-hand how innovative energy technologies are shaping the future of business and society.

Stig Mellström, Segment Leader Healthcare & National Account Manager at Schneider Electric hosted the Swedish group of healthcare sustainability stakeholders:

"We need to build robustly, reduce energy consumption, and achieve our sustainability goals, while ensuring that the indoor climate remains optimal for both patients and staff. This is a challenge, especially as the demand for hospital beds continues to grow. It requires new technology, which in turn demands new ways of working and the right skills. It’s about having the courage to engage in change management and not getting stuck in-this is how we’ve always done it", says Stig.

Finnish Hospital Design Expertise to Support Ukraine’s Healthcare Reconstruction

The Integrated Hospital Design Alliance (IHDA), a group of Finnish hospital design experts, is developing a standardised general hospital model to accelerate the rebuilding of Ukraine’s healthcare network. With around 45% of hospital infrastructure destroyed, the need for modern, adaptable facilities is urgent.

The new concept aims to provide scalable hospitals for communities of about 40,000 people, including wards, operating rooms, and specialised departments. By standardising technical solutions and patient rooms, construction and planning time can be shortened by up to a year.

“The aim is to create a highly standardised design that can be adapted quickly to different needs and locations,” says Rami Kolehmainen, CEO of Raami Architects.

IHDA brings together Granlund and Raami Architects, AINS Group and ONE Architects, K2S Architects, and Nordic Healthcare Group, in partnership with the Ukrainian Red Cross Society and the Confederation of Builders of Ukraine. The project is supported by Finnpartnership, Ukraine’s ministries of Infrastructure and Healthcare, the European Investment Bank, and Finland’s Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

“Dozens of new hospitals are needed. With Nordic design expertise and high-quality solutions, we can make building them faster and more efficient,” adds Jukka Vasara, Chairman of IHDA.

The initiative aims not only to rebuild, but to create a strong foundation for Ukraine’s future healthcare system.

NÄL 25 nyhetsbrev 111NÄL 25 nyhetsbrev ny1

NÄL – First in Sweden

In early June, NÄL (Norra Älvsborgs Länssjukhus) carried out a live exercise together with MedicSolution and the ultra-mobile modular platform MAX24. With this exercise, the hospital became the first in Sweden to conduct this type of simulation.

The exercise included two full-scale surgical scenarios using MAX24’s operating unit. The first scenario was based on the need to increase hospital capacity in parallel with ongoing operations. The second scenario simulated a disaster situation in which the hospital’s regular functions were down.

During the exercises, a full surgical team was on-site to simulate procedures as realistically as possible. MAX24 was able to demonstrate its full capabilities and prove that it can meet the high standards required in civilian healthcare.

“We are very pleased with the exercise, and it was incredibly exciting to see MAX24 in a real-world setting during the simulations. It was educational in many ways and provided us with valuable insights that we will take with us moving forward,” says Jens Sjödahl, CEO of MedicSolution.

Since its debut at Almedalen nearly a year ago, MAX24 has attracted strong interest both in Sweden and internationally. The exercise at NÄL gave MedicSolution the opportunity to stress-test its core functionality and gain learnings from a live scenario with a complete surgical team and full equipment in place.

“For us, this is clear proof that we have developed an ultra-mobile solution that meets all the requirements of civilian healthcare. It also gave us another opportunity to demonstrate that our logistics work and that we can deliver anywhere in Sweden within 24 hours,” concludes Jens Sjödahl.
