What does it take to turn sustainable healthcare ambitions into real-world change? At the 8th Nordic Conference on Sustainable Healthcare in Malmö, stakeholders from across healthcare, industry, research and policy came together to exchange ideas, share experiences and explore practical ways forward. Now, as planning for the 2027 conference gets underway, we invite you to revisit some of the voices and moments that made this year’s event special and help shape what comes next.
Held on 1 October 2026 at Malmö Arena Hotel, the 8th Nordic Conference on Sustainable Healthcare brought together more than 250 participants for a day of knowledge exchange, new connections and discussions about the future of sustainable healthcare.
The conference was the centrepiece of Sustainable Healthcare Week 2026, which welcomed more than 500 participants from over 25 countries across the main conference and surrounding activities.
The week included 10 side events, creating additional opportunities to explore topics such as sustainable public procurement, prevention, research and innovation, healthcare supply resilience and implementation.
Different perspectives, one shared challenge
This year’s programme brought together voices from across the healthcare ecosystem, including representatives from the European Commission, the European Investment Bank, Danish Regions, the Norwegian Hospital Procurement Trust, Region Stockholm and Doctors Without Borders, alongside experts from healthcare, research and industry.
The discussions highlighted a central message: sustainable healthcare is about more than reducing environmental impact. It also means improving patient outcomes, preventing harm, using resources more effectively and building healthcare systems that are resilient for the future.
In the video, Jonas Karlsson, Senior Strategic Marketing Manager at BD; Marielle Backström, Marketing Manager Operating Room Solutions at Mölnlycke Health Care; Rachel Stancliffe, CEO of the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare; and Martin Uriarte Asteinza, Policy Officer - Climate Change and Health at European Commission share their perspectives from the conference.
Their contributions reflect the value of bringing different experiences and areas of expertise together and creating opportunities for ideas to develop into practical action.
The impact goes beyond the conference day
One of the strongest takeaways from Malmö was the value participants placed on connecting with others working towards more sustainable healthcare. Feedback highlighted new professional relationships, international perspectives, cross-sector conversations and insights that participants could take back to their own organisations.
These exchanges are an important part of moving the sector forward. No single organisation can address the challenges alone. Progress depends on collaboration between healthcare providers, industry, researchers, policymakers, procurement organisations and other stakeholders.
Sustainable Healthcare Week 2026 also marked important milestones for international collaboration, including the signing of the charter for the International Consortium for Sustainable Healthcare (ICSH) and the first Collaboration of Sustainable Healthcare Research (CSHR).
Together, these initiatives reflect the growing need to strengthen knowledge exchange, research and cooperation across borders.
Help shape the 2027 conference
The conversations in Malmö are continuing and planning for the next Nordic Conference on Sustainable Healthcare is already underway.
What should be on the agenda in 2027? Which challenges need more attention, which solutions deserve a wider audience, and what opportunities for collaboration should we create?
We want the next conference to reflect the needs and ambitions of the sustainable healthcare community. Whether you represent a hospital, healthcare region, company, research organisation, public authority or another stakeholder, we welcome your ideas.
Would you like to contribute to the programme, share your expertise, present a solution, become a partner or exhibitor, or help shape the discussions for 2027? We would love to hear from you.
