Green Design in Single Use Items: The Case of the Improvement of the Mediplast Vomit Bag

This project, which started on 1 July 2024, seeks to contribute to sustainable development in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and medical technology products. Project partners are NCSH and Mediplast.

The sustainable development of the Mediplast Vomit Bag can substantially decrease the generated waste (including hazardous waste) at healthcare facilities, having a direct impact on the environment (CO2 emissions) and the economy of the healthcare sector. At the same time, designing and manufacturing the product will foster collaboration and awareness of the importance of sustainable design in single use items.

DAPHNE: Decarbonising Healthcare in EU Regions

The DAPHNE project runs from 2024 to 2028.

Recognising healthcare as a hugely energy-intensive sector, DAPHNE sets out to improve 6 national/regional/local authorities' capacity to design and implement better healthcare policies – focused specifically on decarbonisation.

To do this, the project will both chart a course to decarbonisation as well as identify breakthrough technologies and innovative tools that could be scaled-up to accelerate the healthcare sector's energy transition. 

Among 8 partner organisations from 7 EU countries, we at NCSH function as an overall European advisory organisation. We will support the participating national/regional/local authorities with matters related to technical solutions, policy implementation and best practices.

KitNewCare: Pioneering Transformation in Kidney Healthcare Sustainability Across Europe

Project website
KitNewCare, an EU-funded Horizon Europe project, aims to help health and care systems better embrace environmental sustainability and climate-neutrality, with a focus on kidney care.

The project runs from January 2024 to December 2027.

At the heart of this initiative is a pressing issue: healthcare systems are significant contributors to carbon emissions, accounting for approximately 5–11 % of the total at global level. Within this context, kidney care emerges as an ideal candidate for systemic change due to its substantial disease burden, resource footprint and well-defined care pathways and ecosystem.

KitNewCare tackles the challenge head-on, identifying and addressing the major health, environmental, financial, and social hotspots in healthcare. The project goes beyond the traditional focus on building energy use – where carbon reduction has been historically concentrated – targeting the broader aspects of products, services and pathways that form a significant part of the carbon footprint.

DesHealth: A Systemic Design Approach to Education and Training on Sustainable Healthcare

The DesHealth project started on 1 December 2023. This project aims to:

- Allow organisations to increase the quality and relevance of their education activities.
- Develop and reinforce the organisations' networks of partners, increasing their capacity to operate jointly at the transnational level.
- Answer the educational gap on Sustainable Healthcare in higher and professional education building capacity of organisations to work transnationally and across sectors.
- Promote the sustainable transition of European health systems by training new and future practitioners addressing common needs and priorities.
- Build co-disciplinary and cross-sectoral relationships between different stakeholders in the health system, in particular between academia, industry and health facilities, enabling sustainability transformations and changes.

Grønnköpingkið – the World's Greenest Hospital

Design: LINK Arkitektur

Grønnköpingkið is a digital hospital created by NCSH to showcase Nordic sustainable healthcare solutions. On the platform, we gather and describe solutions and products that increase the sustainability performance of hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

Launched late 2021, the hospital allows you to find solutions within various categories such as waste, water, pharma and chemicals, energy efficiency, and many more. Each category will hold up to 10 Nordic solutions with information about their installation sites, sustainability performance, supplier information, and everything else you need.

NCSH directs enquiries of potential customers directly to the companies on the platform.
