Finnish Hospital Design Expertise to Support Ukraine’s Healthcare Reconstruction
The Integrated Hospital Design Alliance (IHDA), a group of Finnish hospital design experts, is developing a standardised general hospital model to accelerate the rebuilding of Ukraine’s healthcare network. With around 45% of hospital infrastructure destroyed, the need for modern, adaptable facilities is urgent.
The new concept aims to provide scalable hospitals for communities of about 40,000 people, including wards, operating rooms, and specialised departments. By standardising technical solutions and patient rooms, construction and planning time can be shortened by up to a year.
“The aim is to create a highly standardised design that can be adapted quickly to different needs and locations,” says Rami Kolehmainen, CEO of Raami Architects.
IHDA brings together Granlund and Raami Architects, AINS Group and ONE Architects, K2S Architects, and Nordic Healthcare Group, in partnership with the Ukrainian Red Cross Society and the Confederation of Builders of Ukraine. The project is supported by Finnpartnership, Ukraine’s ministries of Infrastructure and Healthcare, the European Investment Bank, and Finland’s Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.
“Dozens of new hospitals are needed. With Nordic design expertise and high-quality solutions, we can make building them faster and more efficient,” adds Jukka Vasara, Chairman of IHDA.
The initiative aims not only to rebuild, but to create a strong foundation for Ukraine’s future healthcare system.
